Combinations like ティ (ti), ディ (di), ファ (fa), and ヴィ (vi) are built by pairing a full katakana character with a small version of another — a workaround rather than part of the original grid, which is one reason loanwords rarely sound like the English they came from; the katakana available to represent them was never a perfect match for English phonetics to begin with.
