Weather and Seasons in Japanese
Weather is the most-used small-talk topic in Japan by a wide margin, and unlike in English it is not filler — it is a genuine opener that expects a reply. Atsui desu ne on a August afternoon will get you an answer from almost anyone.
The seasons are strongly felt and strongly marked. Rainy season in June, brutal humidity through August, typhoons into September, and the two short beautiful windows — cherry blossom and autumn colour — that most visitors plan around. Knowing the season words lets you read a forecast and a festival poster.
