Taxis in Japan are expensive, spotless and entirely willing to take you somewhere you cannot pronounce. The doors open by themselves — do not touch them — and the driver expects an address, a landmark or a phone screen, in that order of usefulness.

Buses work backwards from what most visitors expect. On many routes you board at the rear, take a numbered ticket, and pay at the front when you get off, with the fare for your ticket number shown on a display. Announcing your stop is not needed; pressing the button is.
