I cannot eat meat or fish in Japanese

肉と魚が食べられません

In kana only: にくとさかながたべられません

niku to sakana ga taberaremasen

polite

What it literally says

meat and fish cannot be eaten (by me)

Japanese politeness is mostly built out of phrases that stopped being literal a long time ago. Knowing what is underneath is the difference between repeating a sound and knowing what you said.

When to use it

Say 'cannot' rather than 'do not'. A preference will be worked around; an inability will be respected.
