Black Friday 2026 flights to Japan: what US travelers can expect from JAL, ANA, United and Delta

Black Friday lands on Friday, Nov. 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving, with Cyber Monday on Nov. 30. If a spring 2027 trip to Japan is on your list, this is the week to compare fares. Just don’t expect every airline to announce a sale: as of Oct. 27, none of the major carriers flying from the U.S. had posted Black Friday dates for Japan routes.

What you can see now is a baseline. Japan Airlines’ Los Angeles–Tokyo fare page shows round-trip economy from $990 for March 2027, and its New York–Tokyo page shows $1,137 for the same month. JAL labels both as fares “found by others within the last 24hrs,” so they can change by the hour.

What the airlines are showing before Black Friday

We checked each carrier’s U.S. website on Oct. 27, 2026. “Not announced” means the page we could read showed no Black Friday or holiday sale for Japan.

Airline Route from U.S. Sale dates What to watch
Japan Airlines (JAL) LAX–Tokyo, NYC–Tokyo No Black Friday sale posted LAX–Tokyo from $914 round trip for Nov. 2026–Feb. 2027 and $990 for March 2027; NYC–Tokyo from $927 (Feb.) and $1,137 (March)
All Nippon Airways (ANA) Several U.S. gateways No Black Friday sale posted U.S. homepage lists a Tokyo Stopover offer and Hokkaido and Fukuoka promotions, no U.S.–Japan fares
Delta Seattle–Narita and others No Japan deal posted New daily nonstop Seattle–Narita from March 27, 2027, per Delta’s Tokyo page
United Several U.S. hubs Not readable Deals page loads only with JavaScript; check it in your browser
American Several U.S. hubs No Japan deal posted Flight-deals page showed no Tokyo fares
ZIPAIR U.S.–Tokyo No sale posted Low-cost carrier; JAL miles can be exchanged for ZIPAIR points; homepage showed no current promotion

The JAL figures are the most useful benchmark because they come with dates. LAX–Tokyo at $914 shows up for November, December, January and February travel. The $76 jump to $990 in March is the start of the cherry blossom premium, and JAL showed no April 2027 fare at all on Oct. 27.

When to book for cherry blossom season 2027

Bloom dates move every year, so look at what happened in 2026. Japan Guide’s 2026 cherry blossom reports put Tokyo’s best viewing at March 28–April 4 and Kyoto’s at March 29–April 5. Kyoto’s official start of the season was announced on March 23, 2026.

That puts the core sakura window in the last days of March and the first week of April. A practical approach:

  • Use Black Friday week to price a flexible itinerary landing around March 25–30 and leaving after April 5.
  • If a Black Friday fare to Tokyo comes in under what JAL showed on Oct. 27 for March ($990 from LAX, $1,137 from New York), that is a real saving. If not, you lose little by waiting for a later sale.
  • Check the change and refund rules on the fare before buying. A cheap basic fare that can’t move is risky when you’re chasing a bloom forecast.

Remember the time difference when a sale ends “at midnight Japan time”: in winter, Japan is 14 hours ahead of Eastern Time, so midnight Tokyo is 10 a.m. ET the previous day.

JR Pass and eSIM: prices to compare

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass is not a Black Friday product, but its price structure matters. On the official JR Pass site, an adult ordinary 7-day pass costs ¥50,000 online versus ¥53,000 through an overseas agency. The 14-day pass is ¥80,000 versus ¥84,000, and the 21-day ¥100,000 versus ¥105,000. The site says the price in effect when you buy applies.

Whether the pass pays off depends on your route; our guide to how Japan’s rail fares are built walks through the math. Traveling with big bags? Read up on Shinkansen rules for large suitcases before you pack.

For data, Airalo’s Japan eSIM page listed unlimited plans on Oct. 27 at $26.50 for seven days, $34.50 for 10 days and $48 for 15 days, with no sale notice. Use those as your reference if an eSIM provider advertises a holiday discount.

New tax-free shopping rules from Nov. 1, 2026

If you plan to shop in Japan, the rules change this week. According to Japan Guide, from Nov. 1, 2026, visitors “will always pay tax-inclusive prices at stores and apply for a refund when leaving Japan.” The refund is processed at a customs terminal or through Visit Japan Web in the departure lobby before check-in.

  • Goods must be bought within 90 days of departure.
  • Keep every item from a receipt with you; if one is missing, the whole purchase loses eligibility.
  • The ¥500,000 per-trip cap on consumables is abolished.

The new process means you need the right words at the register. Our Japanese phrasebook has 337 phrases by situation, including “Is this tax-free?” and a full trains and stations section.

What to check closer to Nov. 27

  • Mon., Nov. 23–Sun., Nov. 29: Black Friday week. Check JAL, ANA, United, Delta, American and ZIPAIR sites directly; none had announced Japan sale dates by Oct. 27.
  • Thu., Nov. 26: Thanksgiving. If a sale opens, note the time zone in the fine print.
  • Fri., Nov. 27: Black Friday. Compare against $990 (LAX–Tokyo, March) and $1,137 (NYC–Tokyo, March).
  • Mon., Nov. 30: Cyber Monday. Recheck the same routes and dates.
  • Before paying: confirm the change fee, baggage allowance and whether the fare is refundable.

Fares and prices were checked on Oct. 27, 2026, and change constantly. Confirm all details with the airline or seller before you book.
