Taishō ran from 30 July 1912 to 25 December 1926, the shortest of the four completed eras at fifteen years. It is remembered for “Taishō democracy” — party cabinets, universal male suffrage in 1925, a flowering of cafés, cinema and Western dress — and for the Great Kantō earthquake of 1 September 1923, Taishō 12, which destroyed much of Tokyo and Yokohama. The emperor, Yoshihito, was in poor health for most of his reign, and his son Hirohito served as regent from 1921.
