1875 in the Japanese calendar: Meiji 8
明治8年
Meiji 8 · written M8 on forms
Meijiera8year of the era
How to read it
1875 minus 1868, the year Meiji began, plus one, gives 8: 明治8年. The shortcut Japanese people use: add 67 to a Meiji year and you have the last two digits of the Western year — 8 + 67 = 75. On paper it is M8: forms print the era options — 明・大・昭・平・令, or the letters M T S H R — beside the date box, and you circle one and write the number.
